Indore: Family members of liver transplant patient take oath for organ donation

Indore: The recipient of the second liver transplant, 45 year old Dharmendra Jaiswal, was discharged from Choithram Hospital on Wednesday, just three weeks after the procedure was performed.

Gastroenterologist Dr Ajay Jain said, “The patient had a steady progress since the transplant and had recovered satisfactory to be discharged. It would take him at least a month more to get back to his regular chores. However, he will have to continue immunosuppressants and come for regular check-up at the hospital.”

Liver of 49-year-old brain dead Veena Pariyani, a resident of Dwarkapuri, was transplanted to 45-year-old Jaiswal, a resident of Daulatganj, Ujjain, on March 10 in Choithram Hospital while her heart was transplanted to a patient in Medanta Hospital.

Jaiswal was suffering from liver cirrhosis for the last three years and had registered to Indore Organ Donation Society only few months ago. “We were surprised after getting a call from the hospital for being selected for the transplant,” Jaiswal added.

Family members of Jaiswal too took oath to donate organs and also to motivate others. Meena Jaiswal, recipient’s wife, said, “We have come to know what organ donation is and how it can save many lives. We have also taken oath to donate organs and will motivate others for the same as well.”

Jaiswal also expressed his willingness to meet the family of Pariyani and to express gratitude to them. Meanwhile, Dr Jain said that the hospital is also planning to start live donation and transplantation of liver in near future. Choithram Hospital has also applied for heart transplantation and will start it in couple of months as well.

“We cannot gloat over a couple of successful transplant. Liver transplantation was successful because of team effort, right from the surgeons, assistants, infection control specialists, microbiologists, blood bank medical officers down to the theatre assistants,” Dr Jain added. He said that more than 40000 people need liver transplant in our country but only 2000 take place per year.
